Vijay Mallya drops US airline plan
NEW DELHI: Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines has dropped the plan to have a US-based carrier for flying to India and back. With the airline acquiring a majority stake in Air Deccan — which will get the right to fly abroad next August — setting up a US-registered carrier has become almost ‘irrelevant’ now.
Kingfisher executive VP Hitesh Patel said: “That always remains an option but we can fly abroad on Deccan’s rights next year. And if the norms are relaxed earlier, Kingfisher can do so at the earliest. A-320s have the range to fly to places like Gulf and southeast Asia.” Registering an airline in the US and then having flights to India was being considered as a way of having global operations before Mallya struck the deal with Deccan.
While Kingfisher has been stating that it wants to fly abroad, a ministry official said the airline is yet to make a formal application in this regard. Patel said they would file their application and give a blueprint of global operations. With both Air India’s nonstop Mumbai-New York and Jet’s foreign flights being rated well in the travel industry, Kingfisher has made some big plans.
